How To Hang Your Tomato Plant Upside Down

By simply up-cycling a used 2-liter bottle, you can get a great hanging tomato plant. First, cut the bottom off of the plastic bottle. Once that is complete, you can carefully pull your new tomato plant through the top. Fill with soil and hang upside down with some cord or string and your all done!

Why hang your tomato plant upside down?

Space saving. No need to build or buy a trellis. Most plants take up ground space. This is one of the few you can hang that are useful. Strawberries work too! See how my hanging strawberries are doing here LINK

Growing benefits?

Let’s Get Started!

Start with your newly sprouted Tomato plants. Don’t have any? You really need to read this here then LINK!

Take your 2 liter bottle and cut off the bottom about two inches from the very bottom. Save this piece as it might be used later depending on your preference. See the pictures below for different ways you can cut this. If you find a different way, send me the picture and I will add it to the list!

Use a piece of fabric, denim, or heavy duty cloth. Maybe a small piece of ground barrier cover. Cut a small hole in the middle and feed your tomato plant into the center. Now carefully thread your plant through the top of the bottle, leaving the roots and fabric on the inside. With the bottle upside down, slowly add your soil of choice. If your not sure what soil mixture to use, try mine! This is my favorite and most successful mixture I have found, here!

Gently Water

Add water until the soil is throughly damp. Continue to water every few days. If you find the water is constantly dry, try watering on a slightly more active schedule.

Get Creative and Make it a little nicer!

Feel free to decorate it until your heart is content. Paint the bottle with a base coat, add some flowers and bees on it. I’m going to hand my over to my daughter and see what she comes up with.

Where to Hang Your Tomato Plant Upside Down?

Any ever or overhand will work nicely. Find a location that receives a good amount of sun every day. You can always mount a bracket onto a wall or maybe a fence nearby. Maybe you need a completely new project? This was my first project in a long time. I have always enjoyed working on and building whatever I can get my hands on.
