What Not To Compost

Many common items for various reasons should not be added to your composting pile. Some items could create a foul odor or attract pests such as rodents and flies. Other items might be harmful to humans and plants. They could contain diseases, parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, or viruses.

  • Eggs (Attracts Rats)
  • Black walnut tree leaves or twigs
  • Coal or charcoal ash
  • Dairy products (e.g., butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt)
  • Diseased or insect-ridden plants
  • Garbage
  • Fats, grease, lard, or oils
  • Meat or fish bones and scraps
  • Pet wastes (e.g., dog or cat feces, soiled cat litter)
  • Yard trimmings treated with chemical pesticides
