Who doesn’t like pineapple? They’re a great source of xx and taste great too. Add some xx and you will be on your way to a great drink and a happy day! Keep reading all the way down for my favorite recipe.

Grow Your Own

Find Your Fruit

The one you choose should have plenty of green leaves all in good shape.

Yank the top off!

This step is very important, learn from my mistakes. The first one was a trial from a last-second thought. We had already cut the pineapple up and the top was laying there. I tried to salvage it. It was too late. It attempted to grab and root but ended up just rotting away at the next step. When you yank the top off, it leaves behind most of the fruit and the top intact along with a few very small roots.

Reveal More Roots

By removing the lower two inches of leaves from the top, you allow the water to penetrate to the core of the pineapple.

Suspend Over a Jar

I have found this step critical to success and keeps you from wasting time potting over and over again until one takes. For this, you will need a cup of some sort and a few toothpicks. In this step, jab the toothpicks into the side of the top near the bottom in a way that will not allow the top to fall and submerge in the water.

Your pineapple leaves will look like they are dying. Fear not! Once the roots start to grow and you plant in soil, your plant will start to slowly look much better as time goes on.

Use Magic Water

Fill your cup with just enough water to keep the green leaves just barely into the water. your water should be changed every few days to keep it from becoming stagnant. Rinse your roots off and change your water every two or three days to keep the water fresh and funk free.

Now We Wait…

Results should be seen in a matter of days, if not faster. You will begin to see little tooth-like roots start to reach out for the water. When I started mine, there were very small root-like hairs hanging off of the bottom. These have since grown into much much longer ones.

Can You Use Seeds?

I have not been very successful, actually not successful at all, at trying to grow a full pineapple from its seeds.  This very well could be only because it is store-bought.

Ready to Plant

Soil mixture is very important. Use a pot or container that will fit the size that you expect this plant to grow to. As mentioned earlier, a smaller pot will yield a smaller plant.

Fill pot very full. Currently, my leaves are having issues on the ones that are not higher than the pot edge. I would fill the soil to about one inch from the lip.

How Often to Water

As you would expect, keep them watered to the point the soil is moist, not dry and not wet. Link to water.

Tap water for me has been used in the past and can achieve good results, but I have found that by making your own water, similar to what the hydroponics guys are using works much, much better.  After all, we are growing plants just in water. Isn’t that the definition of hydroponics?

Recently I have heard that using leftover water from boiling eggs is perfect for helping new plants grow.  Boiling the water gets rid of any chlorine that has bee added to the water while the eggs add much-needed nutrients.  Also, save your eggshells to be added to your soil on your next project.

I’m still doing more research and figuring things out.  Check back because more to follow soon!

Where to Keep Them

If you are not able to keep your new pineapple plant outside, it is very easy to turn them into houseplants. Using a smaller pot and some simple pruning will limit them to how big they can grow.

How Much Sun

These plants are XX and need XX amount of sun each day.

Trim Back Leaves

Over time your leaves will become brownish near the bottom.

When to Expect Fruit

Unfortunately, pineapples only produce one fruit in their lifetime. After that, it becomes just a normal nice looking plant.
