What are Onions?

Why Use Onions?

ReGrow Onions From Scraps

Chop the Bottom Off

You don’t need a lot of onion to regrow them from table scraps. Typically, you only need to cut off the bottom quarter of the onion. Make the cut as straight and clean as possible.

Remove the Outer Onion Skin

The papery outside tend to rot and make your water discolor and stink up your kitchen. Be careful not to damage or pull off the roots!

Hover Over Small Bowl

Place them root down inside a contrainer. This could be a shallow bowl or even better a small cup that will suspend them.

Change Water and Allow Sunlight

Even the best water will get stagnant over time. Change the water and rinse out the bowl every few days to ensure there are plenty of nutrients and freshwater. Make sure to place your new onion plants in a window where it can receive some sunlight every day. This will ensure maximum growth potential for the best results.

3 Days Later…

You should begin to see new white roots forming. Now would be a good time to change your water like we talked about above if you have not already.

After About A Week…

Now you should start to see some green shoots sticking out of the top.

Time to Plant!

Using a seedling mixture, you can plant them. The onions do not need to be fully buried but only covered by a thin layer of soil. The best method I have found is to fill your planter with soil, ensure the soil is moist. Slightly press your onions into the soil. Now you can gently sprinkle soil over the top of your new onions. If any of the onions have green sprouts, ensure that the soil does not cover these up.
